Using keywords
medical linux distro on Google, I found some results.
Debian Med
In the first place, of course, Debian-based linux distribution called
Debian Med. The largest Linux distro in free medical software. This custom Debian distro has a goal as a complete operating system for medical practice and research environment.
Some of softwares included 3D slicer, radiograpic viewer, epitools and surveillance related to The R statistic, GNUmed, and many more. Join their
Debian Med mailing list.
This is the reason why I chose Debian, a stable distro as a second choice in dual booting with Arch Linux.
RosLims
This item appeared on Google is blog posted by GooMedic.com.
RosLims stands for Romanian Simple Linux for Medical Students. Created by Dr. Marius Marusteri. Latest Roslims 1.2 based on Knoppix 3.8.1 plus its Romanian localization. Available as a live CD.
Based on Dr. Marius comment at GooMedic.com, this distro has implemented MultiVNC for remote teaching and monitoring environment. But Roslims is discontinued due to lack of supports now.
Linux For Clinics
Created by Allan MacKinnon. The Debian/Ubuntu-based distro,
Linux For Clinics is released in 2008. A compilation of free medical softwares. Remastering Ubuntu with pre-installed medical packages. Some Debian-Med applications will be available here also. Check Allan's note on
Linux for Clinic Blog.
Some softwares as listed in
the quicklist are Aeskulap (medical image viewer) and medical practice management/electronic medical record such as GNUmed server and client, FreeMed, OpenEMR, OpenClinic, etc.
Is that enough?
No great result in the rest. But I found a clue in LinuxMedNews. Some distros like Fedora and openSUSE has a group focused on medical environment.
Fedora Medical
In Fedora's Wiki, especially at
Fedora Special Interest Group (SIG), I found
Fedora Medical link. This group is intended to finding out the spin package of Fedora distro for healthcare community. They are trying to combine some equivalent Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) packages to fit their work-flow in daily use.
They have GNUmed
EMR, Grassroot DiCom medical parser, and InsightToolkit for medical imaging processing library. Join their
Medical-SIG Mailing List.
OpenSUSE Medical
This sub project,
OpenSUSE-Medical is provided and driven by the Community. The idea to provide a distro for doctor, clinic, and medical purposes is started in openSUSE conference in 2009. There will be a desktop and server applications in openSUSE custom distribution. GNUmed is one of the medical software in this project. You may join
openSUSE Medical Mailing List.
FreeBSD Ports: Biology
FreeBSD in not a Linux distribution. They are one of the solid operating system based on BSD. This section,
FreeBSD Ports in Biology, has an extensive list of biomedical-related softwares. There are InsightToolkit, LBreeder, adun--molecular simulator, Advanced Functional Neuro Imaging (AFNI), artemis DNA sequencer, and so on.
MedicaLinux
Found the news on
Dr. Mahmud Ghaznawie story posted on Kompas, in bahasa Indonesia. Released in 2009, MedicaLinux based on Ubuntu/Mint. Was built with the help of
Fadly Kasim. It is available as a live CD. Contains some medical e-books and videos, plus other common free sotwares.
MedicaLinux has already been applied in Medical Faculty of Hasanuddin University, Makassar, indonesia.
Summary
Actually, every medical open source softwares can be installed on each of your favorite Linux distro. As long as they have a proper environment and dependency files. It is the open source code. Freely use based on its license. Except the proprietary format builtin with the distro/remaster distro. It should treat in a different way.
Not only for Linux, but some of them are available for Windows and Mac operating system also.
